A table lamp should put light where it is useful without consuming the whole bedside table or shining directly into your eyes. Compare the complete lamp, including the shade and base, with the way you sit or lie beside it.
Measure from the user, not just the table
Sit in the usual reading position and estimate where the shade and light source would be. Check whether a tall shade blocks a shelf or picture and whether the base leaves space for a book, phone and glass. A small base can still support a shade that projects beyond the tabletop.
| Detail | Useful check |
|---|---|
| Overall height | Position of the light source from your usual seat or pillow |
| Shade width | Overhang beyond the table and clearance from nearby objects |
| Controls | Whether the switch, touch area or cord control is easy to reach |
| Light source | Required bulb fitting or the details of an integrated LED |
Plan the cable route
Place the lamp where its lead reaches the socket without crossing a walkway or becoming trapped in a drawer. Confirm whether the bulb is included and what the maximum permitted bulb specification is. If dimming matters, check the lamp, bulb and control compatibility together. A decorative shade and an LED bulb do not automatically make a dimmable combination. Choose light direction and accessible controls before selecting the final finish.
