Choose the kind of warmth you need

Heaters & Electric Fireplaces

Room heating is a choice about where warmth is needed and how the appliance will occupy the space. A compact fan heater, a longer floor heater and an electric fireplace format have different placement needs. Start with the room and the time you spend there, then compare controls, electrical supply and usable clearances.

Personal warmth and room heating are different tasks

A small heater aimed at a work area and an appliance intended to warm a room should not be compared by appearance alone. Look at the heat settings and the manufacturer’s intended use. Personal hand warmers can appear alongside room heaters in this range; they do not replace a space heater. A decorative flame effect also does not establish the heat output of an electric fireplace.

Understand wattage and thermostat control

Wattage describes electrical input at a stated setting. Running time and thermostat cycling then influence electricity use. For a simple estimate, kilowatts multiplied by hours gives kilowatt-hours; a 2 kW heater operating continuously for one hour uses 2 kWh. Marketing terms such as “graphene” or “energy efficient” do not on their own establish lower running costs for your room.

Plan the clear space before choosing a size

The usable footprint includes the area around the heater, not just its base. Fire and Rescue NSW advises keeping items at least one metre away and following the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Curtains, furniture and drying clothes must stay out of that space. A tip-over feature is an additional control, not a reason to place a heater in a walkway or leave it unattended.

Heaters & Electric Fireplaces — your questions

How can I estimate the cost of running an electric heater?

Multiply the input power in kilowatts by the operating hours and your electricity tariff. For example, 2 kW running continuously for one hour at an illustrative $0.30 per kWh costs $0.60. A thermostat may cycle the heater, so actual use can differ. Compare the same setting and usage period rather than a material or “efficient” label alone.

Does an electric fireplace’s flame effect tell me its heating power?

No. The visual flame and the heating element are separate features to compare. Decide whether you want decoration, supplementary warmth or both, then look for the actual heat settings and intended installation. Also allow access to controls and the required clear space around the unit.

Can a small personal warmer heat a whole room?

A hand warmer is intended for close personal use and is not a substitute for a room heater. For a room, compare the appliance’s intended use, input settings, controls and placement requirements. A small size or a warm surface does not establish enough output for the space you want to heat.
