Particles and moisture need different solutions

Air Purifiers & Dehumidifiers

Choose an air purifier for a clearly defined filtration task and a dehumidifier for moisture removal. The two are not interchangeable. This collection includes filter-based purifiers, ionising devices and moisture-absorbing products, so identify the mechanism before comparing size, controls or a headline room-coverage claim.

Compare filtration and airflow together

A filter specification describes one part of a purifier. The airflow through it determines how much room air is treated over time. Compare a relevant clean-air delivery rate, available fan settings and the room size attached to the manufacturer’s claim. A quiet mode can move less air than the maximum setting. Check replacement-filter availability before choosing the appliance around its purchase price.

Separate a moisture absorber from an electric dehumidifier

A small absorbent pack and a powered dehumidifier remove moisture in different ways and at different scales. Packs can be intended for enclosed storage; an appliance may use a tank or continuous drain arrangement. Identify the stated intended space and capacity. Neither is a substitute for finding a persistent leak or source of damp.

Read ioniser claims carefully

Ionisation is not the same as mechanical particle filtration. The US EPA advises that some electronic air-cleaning technologies can produce ozone and does not certify particular brands of air cleaner. Do not infer whole-room health protection from an ion count or a “virus remover” title. Choose a clearly documented method and operating instructions appropriate to the room.

Air Purifiers & Dehumidifiers — your questions

Should I choose an air purifier or a dehumidifier?

Choose by the problem you want to address. A particle-filtering purifier treats air passing through its filter; a dehumidifier removes moisture. A passive moisture-absorbing pack has a different scale from a powered appliance. For persistent damp, also identify the source, because neither filtration nor a small absorber repairs a leak.

What does CADR tell me about an air purifier?

Clean air delivery rate describes particle-cleaning airflow under the stated test conditions. It helps relate a purifier to a room, but it does not measure every gas, odour or health outcome. Compare the relevant room-size guidance and fan setting together; the quiet setting may deliver less filtered air than the maximum setting.

Why should I compare replacement filters before buying?

The initial appliance price is only one part of ownership. Find the exact filter code, the replacement route and how the filter compartment opens. A similar-looking filter may not fit or seal. Also consider where the purifier will stand so furniture does not block its intake, outlet or access for maintenance.
