For a busy room, rug selection should begin with pile height, backing and the cleaning method you can maintain. A material name alone does not tell you whether a rug suits chair movement, frequent spills or a doorway.
Match construction to the location
A low, relatively even surface may be easier to move a chair across than a deep textured pile, but check the product's intended use. At entrances, compare the edge height with the door clearance. For a rug beneath furniture, check how the legs sit and whether they distort the surface.
| Detail | What to check |
|---|---|
| Fibre composition | Actual percentages rather than a style description |
| Pile | Height, texture and any loops that may catch on objects |
| Backing | Suitability for the floor finish and whether an underlay is needed |
| Cleaning | Spot-cleaning restrictions, washable status and drying requirements |
Plan for the whole care routine
A washable label is useful only if the rug fits the permitted washing equipment and can be dried as directed. Confirm compatibility with underfloor heating separately; do not infer it from thickness or fibre alone. Place a sample or taped outline where the rug will sit and test everyday movement. For homes with pets, consider cleaning access and the rug's construction rather than assuming any one fibre is universally pet proof. Follow the maker's instructions for cleaning products and rotation.
