Tablecloth and Placemat Sizes: Measure the Table and Allow for the Drop

Six pale rectangular woven placemats arranged in an overlapping row.

A tablecloth's finished size depends on the tabletop and the drop you want on each side. Measure the table in the configuration you will use, including any extension leaves.

Calculate the cloth dimensions

For a rectangular table, add twice the desired drop to both length and width. For a round table, add twice the drop to its diameter. A 180 × 90 cm table with a chosen 25 cm drop needs a cloth approximately 230 × 140 cm before considering product-specific fit or care instructions.

Shape Calculation
Rectangle Table length + two drops; table width + two drops
Square Table side + two drops
Round Table diameter + two drops

Test the drop with the chairs

The preferred appearance must still allow people to sit and move comfortably. Check that the cloth does not catch on chair arms, obscure controls or trail where it could be pulled. Follow any laundering guidance that affects the finished size. For placemats, lay out the plate, cutlery and glass before choosing dimensions. Leave space between settings and for shared dishes. A coordinated set should support the meal arrangement rather than force every item into a crowded rectangle.
