Glassware and Mug Capacity: Choosing for Water, Coffee and Tea

Green and yellow ceramic tea set with three cups and a carrying case.

The stated capacity of a glass or mug may describe filling close to the rim. The comfortable serving amount can be lower, especially when adding milk, foam or ice.

Compare height with the serving equipment

Measure the clearance beneath a coffee machine or drink dispenser with its tray in place. Check the mug's handle width and whether it fits the cupboard or dishwasher arrangement. A tall narrow cup and a short wide one can hold similar volumes while working differently in daily use.

Detail What to establish
Capacity Whether the figure is nominal or a recommended serving level
Handle Grip space and projection beyond the cup body
Material Exact construction and permitted hot or cold use
Care Dishwasher, microwave and cleaning restrictions

Choose for the drink, not just the label

Espresso, tea, water and drinks with ice use different proportions of the vessel. Compare a familiar cup with the proposed dimensions to judge the change. Do not assume that thick glass is heat resistant or that double walls permit microwave use. For sets, check the number of matching pieces and whether replacement items can be identified by size. A consistent, practical capacity is more useful than a decorative description that leaves the actual dimensions unclear.
