Measuring tools should be selected by range, accuracy and the measurement required. A display with many decimal places does not necessarily measure accurately to all those places.
Separate resolution from accuracy
Resolution describes the smallest displayed increment. Accuracy describes how closely a measurement can match the true value under stated conditions. Check both, along with calibration or verification guidance where relevant.
| Tool or feature | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Caliper | Measuring range, jaw access and permitted measurement types |
| Distance meter | Range, reference point and suitable target conditions |
| Sensor or meter | Quantity measured, units and operating environment |
| Display | Readability and unit selection |
Match the tool to the decision
Choose a specification suitable for the tolerance required by the task. A rough room-layout measurement and a precision component fit have different needs. Follow the manufacturer's method and check the zero or reference setting as instructed. For electrical, pressure or other hazardous measurements, use properly rated equipment and competent handling. Do not treat a general-purpose meter as suitable for every system. A clear range and accuracy specification is more useful than an impressive number of displayed digits.
