A ladder or work platform should be selected for the task, support surface and permitted working position. Product height is not the same as a safe working or access height.
Define the job first
Record the location, duration, tools carried and surface conditions. Use appropriate work-at-height guidance and consider whether a ladder is suitable at all. Some tasks need a platform, scaffold or professional access equipment instead.
| Detail | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Type | Intended access or working use |
| Load | User, tools and materials within the documented limit |
| Setup | Required angle, locking and support arrangement |
| Environment | Electrical hazards, traffic and ground conditions |
Follow the permitted standing positions
Do not infer a safe reach by adding a person's height to the ladder length. Follow the manufacturer's marked restrictions and relevant safety guidance. Never extend reach by placing a ladder on improvised supports or leaning beyond safe instructions. Inspect equipment before use and remove damaged items from service as directed. Choose a documented, task-appropriate access system rather than the tallest product that fits in storage. Obtain competent advice when the site or task is uncertain.
