Home Safe Buying Guide: Internal Space, Mounting and Access

Black safe with an electronic keypad

A home safe should be selected for the objects stored and the protection actually documented. A lockable metal box is not automatically certified against burglary or fire.

Measure the usable interior

Check internal dimensions, shelf arrangement and the opening through which items must pass. Door thickness and locking mechanisms can reduce the available space compared with the external cabinet size.

Detail What to verify
Protection Exact certification and test scope, if claimed
Mounting Approved fixing method and suitable structure
Access Key, code or other system and its documented backup method
Contents Space for the actual documents or objects

Plan installation and operation

Follow the manufacturer's mounting instructions and use appropriate professional help where needed. A safe's weight alone does not establish secure installation. Check how batteries are changed and how authorised access is retained if an electronic lock loses power. Do not assume a fire claim covers every type of media or duration. Confirm the precise rating and any insurance requirements independently. Choose verified protection, suitable internal space and a manageable access routine rather than relying on terms such as security or heavy duty.

Check the opening as well as the cavity

An object may fit the internal dimensions but not pass through the safe's clear door opening. Measure folders, cases or devices in their stored orientation, including cables or protective sleeves. Check shelves, hinges and locking hardware that occupy internal space. Record how authorised users regain access if an electronic lock loses power, and retain the manufacturer's instructions securely rather than relying on a remembered sales description.
