Camera Tripods and Mounts: Payload, Thread and Packed Size

Black camera tripod with a close-up of its adjustable ball head.

A camera tripod must support the full camera and lens combination and use a compatible mounting system. Maximum height is only one part of the decision.

Add the complete load

Include the lens, microphone, light or other accessories that will remain on the support. Compare the tripod and head ratings separately where provided. Check the camera's mounting thread and any quick-release plate compatibility.

Detail Practical comparison
Working height Useful height without relying on an unsuitable extension
Packed length Fit in the bag or vehicle
Head Movement, locking controls and orientation required
Feet Suitability for the intended surface and use

Test access and balance

Check that the mounting plate does not block battery or card access where that matters. A long lens can change balance even if the total weight is within a stated limit. Follow the manufacturer's setup and loading guidance. Phone holders are separate accessories and need their own device-size and fixing checks. Do not assume a lightweight travel tripod is suitable for every camera simply because the screw fits. Choose stability, compatibility and the working position before comparing the tallest advertised extension.
