A display cabinet should fit the largest objects in the collection and leave enough room to handle them. Shelf height, door openings and the depth behind the front edge matter more than the number of shelves alone.
Plan the objects and their bases
Measure each item's full height, width and depth, including stands or protective cases. Record which pieces need to be lifted vertically and which can slide out. If the shelves are adjustable, check the available positions rather than assuming any height can be created.

| Feature | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Transparent panels | The specified material and approved cleaning method. |
| Shelf loads | The limit per shelf and whether it applies to evenly distributed contents. |
| Lighting | Whether it is included, its power connection and access for replacement or maintenance. |
| Doors | Clear opening size, hinge intrusion and space in front of the cabinet. |
Choose placement carefully
Follow the securing instructions and check the wall or floor requirements. Keep the cabinet away from locations where doors, pets or passing objects can strike it. If the collection is sensitive to light, heat or humidity, obtain item-specific conservation guidance rather than assuming an enclosed cabinet solves those conditions. Glass-looking panels do not establish ultraviolet protection, and a door does not prove an airtight seal. For valuable or delicate items, ask for the relevant specifications. Leave room to clean the shelves and rearrange the display so the cabinet stays useful as the collection changes.
