Bookshelf dimensions should start with the books and objects you plan to store. Paperbacks, large art books, folders and baskets need different depths and shelf spacing. The unit's overall depth may include a back panel or front detail that reduces usable space.
Measure the largest items
Record height, depth and thickness for the awkward items first. Add room to take them out without scraping the shelf above. If a collection is heavy, compare the documented load per shelf and the unit's total rating; do not assume every shelf can carry the total stated for the whole bookcase.
Compare shelf design
| Detail | Useful check |
|---|---|
| Adjustable shelves | Available fixing positions and the usable gaps they produce. |
| Fixed compartments | Internal dimensions of each opening, including dividers. |
| Open back | Whether the books need a stop or bookends and how the unit is secured. |
| Baskets | Width including handles and enough clearance to pull them out. |
Plan placement and securing
Follow the manufacturer's anchoring instructions and choose fixings for the actual wall. Keep heavy items where the instructions recommend and avoid an arrangement that encourages climbing to reach attractive objects. Access to sockets, switches and doors should remain clear. For a mixed display, place a measured outline of the largest object on each proposed shelf in a sketch. Check the depth of ornaments as well as their height. An attractive arrangement needs enough space to clean and remove items; tightly filling every compartment can make the shelving difficult to use even when everything technically fits.
