Will a Sofa Fit? Measure the Room and Delivery Route

Grey upholstered sofa bed in its seated position

A sofa needs to fit twice: through the route into your home and in the room where you will use it. Check the exact product dimensions and packaging before assuming a model will fit because its seat count sounds right.

Measure the furniture in every position

Record overall width, depth and height, including arms and backrests. A three-seat description does not define a standard width. For modular furniture, check each module as well as the complete arrangement.

A sofa bed needs its open sleeping footprint. A recliner needs the space specified for reclining and operating its mechanism. Include the access you need to move around the furniture while it is open, rather than testing only the closed position.

Lay out the room before buying

Use removable tape to mark the proposed footprint. Open nearby doors, cupboards and drawers, and walk the usual route through the room. Check the relationship with a coffee table, television and any movable furniture.

For illustration, a 2,100 mm sofa along a 3,000 mm wall leaves 900 mm in total at its ends. That does not establish a usable walkway: wall returns, door swings, side tables and the sofa's depth still need to be considered.

Check the narrowest points on the route

Delivery measurements to gather
Part of the route Check
Doorways Clear opening rather than nominal door size; include handles and other obstructions.
Hallways Width and space for turns before and after doorways.
Stairs Width, landing depth, headroom and turns.
Lifts Door opening and internal dimensions, plus building delivery requirements.
Product packaging Largest carton and whether the sofa arrives assembled or in sections.

Do not rely only on diagonal measurements or assume that a delivery team can remove doors, lift furniture over a balcony or dismantle the sofa. Confirm the delivery service and access requirements separately. Product dimensions do not promise a particular delivery method.

Confirm removable parts before counting on them

Some sofas have removable legs or separate backs, while others do not. Check the instructions for the specific model. Do not reduce the dimensions on your plan unless the removable part and the resulting size are confirmed.

For a flat-packed or modular option, allow space to assemble it and bring each carton into the room. Keep a clear path to exits and leave the operating clearances required by the manufacturer.

Build a measured shortlist

Compare sofas and seating by assembled footprint and package dimensions. If the room also serves guests, check sofa beds in their open position before choosing a style or colour.

Product example: Lounge Sofa Bed, 2‑Seater Floor Folding, Fabric, Grey. Check the current listing for the exact model, dimensions, included parts and availability; the photograph illustrates this example rather than every item in the collection.
