Match the underside to the floor

A gripped underside designed for carpet is a different product from a smooth-backed hard-floor mat. Check the intended surface and carpet depth rather than assuming every transparent mat works everywhere. A mat that flexes too much or shifts under the castors can be uncomfortable to use even if it fits the desk area.

Measure the chair’s movement

Roll the chair through the normal movements of sitting down, reaching drawers and standing up, then mark that area. Allow for the castors, not just the seat. A lip under the desk can protect the foot space, while the main body needs to remain wide enough for movement without repeatedly rolling over an edge.

Keep the surface flat and clean

Follow the supplied flattening instructions for a mat delivered rolled and allow it to settle before normal use. Keep grit from collecting under the mat or in the castors. Lift and inspect the area periodically; do not rely on the mat as a guarantee against every mark or indentation.

Can I use a carpet chair mat on a timber floor?

Do not transfer a gripper-backed carpet mat to a timber floor: the underside can damage the surface. Choose a mat specifically intended for that hard floor and finish. For carpet, match the mat to the pile and underlay; a suitable outline alone does not establish compatibility.

How large should a chair mat be around a desk?

Mark where all the castors travel when you sit down, turn to drawers and stand up. The mat should cover that movement, not just the chair's resting footprint. Account for desk legs and any lip under the desk so the chair is not repeatedly rolling over an edge.

Can I use a rolled chair mat as soon as I unpack it?

Wait until it lies flat as directed by its manufacturer. A raised edge or curled centre interferes with rolling and creates a trip point. Use the supplied unpacking method rather than applying heat or bending it sharply; materials differ and a method for one mat may damage another.
