Match the tool to your glass

Magnetic & Manual Window Cleaners

A magnetic window cleaner must match the glass thickness and the way the window opens. A manual squeegee or track brush handles a different part of the job. Choose the cleaning method first, then plan how to reach the glass without leaning out; the selection includes both magnetic and conventional tools.

Check glass thickness before choosing magnet strength

Magnetic tools are designed for stated thickness ranges. Single glazing and insulated glazing units are not interchangeable measurements, and a stronger magnet is not automatically better. Match the complete glazing arrangement to the tool maker’s instructions. One model is described for 3–10 mm glass; that specification belongs to that model, not the whole collection.

Plan the outside unit and the edges

Use the manufacturer’s retention cord and setup instructions for a two-sided tool. Consider frames, seals and any section the head cannot reach. Do not lean outside or take a risky position to retrieve a detached piece. If the glazing or access is unsuitable, choose a safer manual method or professional window cleaning instead of forcing a magnetic tool to fit.

Tracks and finishing need different tools

A track brush reaches grooves that a flat glass head cannot. A squeegee removes water from accessible glass and may need a separate cloth for edges. Keep pads clean so grit is not dragged over the surface. One magnetic listing has contradictory single-sided and two-sided wording; clarify the supplied parts before choosing it for outside-glass cleaning.

Magnetic & Manual Window Cleaners — your questions

Will a magnetic window cleaner work on double glazing?

Only if the chosen model is designed for the full glazing thickness and construction. “Double sided” describes the cleaning arrangement, not automatic compatibility with double glazing. Obtain the glazing specification and compare it with the tool’s permitted range before choosing magnet strength; stronger is not automatically easier to move.

Can a magnetic cleaner reach right into window corners?

Its head shape, frame depth and seals determine the edge it can reach. A magnetic pair may clean the main pane while a small brush or cloth finishes accessible edges and tracks. Compare the head with your smallest pane and opening, and avoid forcing it across raised fittings.

What happens if the outside magnetic pad detaches?

The retaining cord is there to limit a fall when correctly fitted for that tool. Set it up before positioning the outside piece and follow the maker’s attachment method. Never lean out to catch or retrieve a detached pad. If safe placement or retrieval is not possible, choose another cleaning method or professional help.
