Choose what belongs behind doors or in drawers

Bedroom Cabinets & Drawer Storage

Bedroom cabinets can organise clothes in drawers, on shelves or behind doors. Folded jumpers need different space from small accessories, and a six-drawer chest can spread that space vertically or across a wide wall. Compare the usable compartments and how they open beside your bed before choosing the cabinet shape.

Choose a compartment that suits the contents

Drawers bring folded items towards you, while cupboard shelves leave the whole compartment open behind a door. Deep shelves can suit larger bedding bundles; shallow drawers separate smaller items. Measure the largest item you plan to store before using the cabinet’s external volume as a guide.

Allow for both opening and standing space

A drawer needs its own extension space plus room for you to use it. A hinged cupboard door swings into the room and can collide with a bedside table. Map those movements onto the bedroom floor so the storage remains accessible when the bed is made and other furniture is in place.

Plan the installed height

A high cupboard and a low chest offer different reach and display space. Decide whether the top needs to be useful or simply remain clear. Follow the furniture’s anchoring instructions and choose the position with that installation in mind.

Useful answers

Bedroom Cabinets & Drawer Storage questions, answered

Are drawers or cupboard shelves better for folded clothes?

Drawers bring a stack towards you and help separate smaller groups. Shelves can accommodate larger bundles but leave items at the back harder to see. Compare a typical stack of clothing with the internal compartment, then decide whether pulling it forward or seeing a larger open space suits your routine.

Why should I measure a cabinet opening as well as its shelf?

The door, hinges and frame can narrow the route into a compartment. A box may fit on the shelf yet be difficult to put through the opening. Compare both measurements, including any fixed divider, before choosing storage baskets or moving bulky bedding into the cabinet.

How do I plan drawer space opposite a bed?

Mark the closed cabinet, the full drawer extension and the place where you will stand. Those three areas need to work together. A drawer that just clears the bed may still be uncomfortable to use if there is nowhere to stand or if bed linen catches its corners.
