A gate opener must match the gate's design, dimensions, weight and site. Swing and sliding systems have different movement and installation requirements.
Record the gate and route
Measure each gate leaf or sliding section and obtain its weight and construction details. Check hinges, tracks, travel and ground conditions. An opener does not repair a poorly moving or damaged gate.

Plan the complete installation
Have a competent installer assess entrapment risks, vehicle and pedestrian access, emergency release and applicable requirements. Do not choose a motor solely because its maximum weight exceeds an estimate of the gate. Check remote-control compatibility, access features and any ongoing maintenance. Solar or battery options have their own sizing and operating conditions. Choose a documented system for the actual gate and site, with installation and safety resolved before comparing convenience features.
Bring a complete site description
Record gate type, leaf dimensions, opening direction and the available operating space for the installer or supplier. Note slopes, nearby walls and access requirements without assuming that a motor can compensate for a gate that binds or is poorly supported. Ask which controls, safety devices and manual-release arrangements form part of the specified system. An accessory pictured beside an opener is not necessarily included.
