Automatic Gate Openers

Open your driveway gate without getting out of the car. Compare single swing, double swing and sliding gate opener kits, including solar-powered options. Choose the movement first, then match the motor, power supply and controls to your gate and the people who use it.

Use the existing gate’s movement to narrow the range. Converting from swing to sliding is a change to the whole entrance, not just a different motor purchase.

Why do both gate width and weight matter?

A long swing leaf places different demands on an operator from a short leaf of the same weight. Solid infill also catches wind. Compare the manufacturer’s combined limits and mounting geometry, rather than treating the largest kilogram figure as a stand-alone guarantee.

On double gates, establish whether the rating applies to each leaf or to the pair. On sliding gates, distinguish the supplied rack length from the driveway opening width. The installer needs enough compatible rack for the actual travel and a gate that moves smoothly on sound guides.

Make a short record before comparing kits: movement type, leaf width, estimated or documented gate mass, post dimensions, clear travel space and existing power. Photos of the hinges or track make a compatibility enquiry much more useful.

Is solar power a good fit for your driveway?

Solar can be useful where running power to the entrance is inconvenient, but the panel needs a suitable unshaded position. Compare the battery and charging arrangement as well as panel wattage. A solar-compatible motor, a solar-backup package and a complete off-grid kit are not necessarily the same purchase.

Daily use matters: a quiet farm entrance and a driveway opening repeatedly through the day place different demands on the battery. Ask for the kit’s operating guidance for that pattern and location. For mains-powered equipment, include the required electrical work in the installation plan.

What should be in the kit for your daily routine?

A remote suits regular drivers. A compatible keypad can let authorised visitors enter without being given a remote. App control needs its stated connection method; “app” does not always mean the gate can be operated from anywhere over the internet.

Compare the actual box contents: operators, controller, remotes, brackets, rack, solar equipment and any safety accessories. Keypads and electric locks may be separate. Keep the manual-release key accessible to authorised users so a power problem does not leave the entrance unusable.

Have the finished moving-gate system assessed for impact and trapping hazards, including its behaviour during manual release. For other boundary products, return to gates, fencing and accessories.

Useful answers

Automatic Gate Openers: your questions

Can I fit a swing opener to a gate that drags on the ground?

The gate and supporting structure need repair first. An opener is intended to move a suitable, freely operating gate; a stronger motor is not a remedy for dragging hinges, a sagging leaf or a damaged track.

Does a solar gate opener keep working through a power cut?

A suitably configured solar-and-battery system can operate independently of mains power, but the answer depends on the actual kit and battery condition. Confirm whether the listing includes a battery, charging equipment and an off-grid operating arrangement.

Can I use my old remote with a new gate motor?

Only if the remote and receiver are compatible. Frequency alone is not enough: coding and pairing methods also matter. Check the exact models before assuming an existing remote, keypad or copied transmitter will work.

Does automatic closing mean the gate is safe around people?

No. Auto-close is an operating feature, not a complete protection system. The installation needs assessment of the moving edges, trapping points, supports and appropriate protective devices. Keep children away from the gate’s movement area.
