A USB-C connector does not guarantee video output, a particular data speed or laptop charging. A hub or dock must match the functions supported by the computer's port as well as the connected devices.
Make a port checklist
Identify the exact computer model and its port specifications. List the displays, storage devices, keyboard and charging arrangement you want to use. Check operating-system support and any required software for the dock.
| Function | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Video | Supported display protocol, resolution, refresh rate and number of screens |
| Data | Speed supported by the host, dock, cable and connected device |
| Power delivery | Supported direction and available power after the dock's own requirements |
| Network or audio | Required ports, drivers and operating-system compatibility |
Compare the complete connection
A cable can limit a setup even when the dock and computer support the desired function. Confirm the supplied cable and power adaptor specifications. Do not assume a charging-only USB-C cable carries display signals. For multiple monitors, check the exact host and operating-system arrangement rather than relying on the number of sockets. Choose a dock with documented support for your equipment, not simply the largest port count.
