A cable's connector shape identifies how it plugs in, but not every capability it supports. Match the source device, destination and required function before choosing length or appearance.
| Connection family | What to check |
|---|---|
| HDMI or DisplayPort | Resolution, refresh rate, direction and any active adaptor requirements |
| USB | Connector at each end, data capability and charging support |
| Ethernet | Supported category, device ports and installation requirements |
Read both devices' specifications
Record the exact output port on the computer, player or console and the input on the display or accessory. An adaptor may work in only one direction. A physically compatible connection can still omit audio, microphone, video or the required data function.
Choose a practical length
Measure the route with enough movement for the equipment, while following the cable and device guidance. Avoid pulling connectors tight or routing cables where chairs, doors or heat can damage them. For longer or concealed installations, use components specified for that application. Do not assume a more expensive cable improves a function beyond what the devices support. Start with the required signal and verified compatibility, then select a suitable length and construction. Keep model and specification details so replacements can be matched accurately.
