How to Measure a Bedroom Before Buying Furniture

Grey upholstered bed in a furnished bedroom

Measure the room, the furniture in use and the route into the room. A bed frame can fit against a wall yet leave no space to open a wardrobe or bring the mattress through a tight turn.

Draw the room before choosing a suite

Sketch each wall and mark doors, windows, skirting boards, power points and fixed cupboards. Record measurements in one unit, such as millimetres. Measure narrow points separately rather than assuming the room is a perfect rectangle.

Include anything that reduces usable space: a projecting window sill, a door handle, a wall heater or the space needed to reach a socket. Mark the swing of the bedroom door so that a new chest of drawers does not block it.

Use external furniture dimensions

A mattress size is not a bed frame's overall footprint. Headboards, upholstered rails and storage mechanisms can extend beyond the mattress. Compare the listed assembled width and length of the actual frame with your room plan.

For storage beds, allow the opening space specified for drawers or the lifting mechanism. For wardrobes, draw the door swing or sliding-door access. Sliding doors avoid a hinged arc, but they do not make the internal storage accessible across its full width at once.

Try a worked layout example

Suppose a room is 3,200 mm wide and a proposed bed frame is 1,700 mm wide. Subtracting gives 1,500 mm in total, or 750 mm on each side if the bed is centred. This is an illustrative calculation, not a recommended clearance: bedside tables, door openings, mobility needs and the actual room shape still need to fit.

Mask the proposed footprint on the floor with removable tape. Walk the route to the wardrobe and try the intended drawer and door positions. This is a useful check before committing to a matching suite that occupies more space than individual pieces.

Check the delivery route separately

Measurements to record before ordering
Location Record
Room Usable wall lengths, obstructions and ceiling height.
Furniture Assembled footprint, open depth and height.
Access Door openings, hallway turns, stairs and lift dimensions.
Packaging Largest carton dimensions and whether parts arrive assembled.

A flat-packed frame may travel through a doorway more easily than an assembled cabinet, but the largest carton still needs to pass. Do not assume doors or legs can be removed unless the product instructions say so.

Finish with stability and daily use

Use the manufacturer's anchoring instructions for storage furniture and appropriate fixings for your wall. The ACCC's furniture safety guidance explains why anchoring matters. Keep drawers and shelves usable without creating a climbing route for children.

Compare bedroom furniture against your measurements, then review each product's dimensions and assembly requirements before ordering.

Product example: Bed Frame Queen, Fabric, Charcoal. Check the current listing for the exact model, dimensions, included parts and availability; the photograph illustrates this example rather than every item in the collection.
