Identify what the listing includes

A lighted tree is not the same purchase as a string for the tree you already own. Look at whether the item includes branches, a stand or only lighting. This prevents comparing the price of a complete decorative tree with the price of lights alone.

Plan the route through the branches

For separate strings, work out where the lead will reach the tree and how the lit length will move around it. A loose outer spiral and a deeper arrangement create different looks and use different amounts of cable. Keep the controller reachable after ornaments are added so changing settings does not mean reaching through the display.

Choose one dominant light effect

Warm white, multicolour and animated lighting can each define the tree. If several effects are used together, let one be dominant so the decorations remain visible. Compare a lit tree in its intended room lighting rather than assuming the brightest product photograph represents the most suitable result.
