A floor lamp needs space for its base, stem, shade and cable. For reading, its reach and light direction often matter more than its total height.
Place the base before judging the shade
Mark the base footprint beside the chair or sofa. Check that it sits on a stable surface without obstructing the route around the furniture. For an arched lamp, measure how far the shade extends from the base; the light can reach a seat while the support remains well behind it.
| Design | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Upright shade | Light distribution and whether the source is visible from the seat |
| Adjustable reading arm | Reach, adjustment range and joint position |
| Arc lamp | Base weight, projection and overhead clearance |
Test the practical controls
Check where the switch is located and whether it can be reached without moving furniture. Confirm the bulb fitting, maximum permitted specification and dimmer compatibility, or the details of an integrated LED system. An integrated source may have a different replacement process from a standard bulb. Keep the cable out of walkways and follow the product's placement instructions. Do not place fabric or decorations against the light source. A lamp that provides the right direction of light with a stable, accessible base is more useful than one selected from height or appearance alone.
