A vase works best when its opening, height and base suit the stems you want to display. A narrow neck gathers a small bunch; a wider opening allows a spreading arrangement but may need more stems to look balanced.
Build from the opening and base
Measure the vase's mouth as well as its overall width. Check how far the stems can enter and whether the shape lets them sit at the intended angle. A tall arrangement needs a stable base, particularly on a narrow console or a table used for meals.
| Vase shape | Arrangement to consider |
|---|---|
| Narrow neck | A small number of stems held close together |
| Wide cylinder | A fuller bunch with space to spread |
| Low bowl | A low arrangement that keeps sightlines across a table open |
Distinguish decoration from water use
A decorative vessel is not automatically watertight or suitable for fresh flowers. Confirm that use in the description, including any liner requirements. For artificial stems, compare their length with the vase depth before trimming or bending them. Test the arrangement in its final position. Check that it does not obstruct conversation, lights or a walkway, and that water cannot spill onto furniture or electrical items. Choose a vase you can clean through its opening; an attractive narrow shape may be awkward to rinse after fresh flowers.
