A quilt should cover the sleepers and provide the drop you want at each side. Its size is separate from the mattress size, and its cover must fit the quilt itself.
Calculate the side drop
Subtract the mattress width from the quilt width, then divide by two for a simple centred estimate. A 240 cm quilt on a 153 cm mattress has approximately 43.5 cm available on each side before allowing for the sleepers and the loft of the filling. This example is a layout calculation, not a recommended size for every queen bed.
| Item | Measurement that matters |
|---|---|
| Mattress | Width and length of the sleeping surface |
| Quilt | Finished width and length, plus how it sits over the sleepers |
| Quilt cover | Internal dimensions and the manufacturer's recommended quilt size |
| Bed frame | Height and whether a footboard restricts the desired drop |
Check the length independently
A wide quilt can still be too short for your preferred arrangement. Measure from where its top edge will sit to the bottom edge you want. A thick quilt uses some fabric in its curves, so a flat floor measurement is only an estimate of the finished appearance. Do not automatically pair a king quilt with any cover labelled king. Read both labels, check the closure and look for corner ties if these matter to you. Keeping the original packaging details makes replacing the cover easier later.
