A sofa throw and a bed blanket may look similar online, but their useful dimensions can be very different. Choose the coverage first, then the fabric and weight you want to handle.
Measure the intended use
For a sofa, decide whether the blanket will cover one seated person, two people or the furniture itself. For a bed, compare its width and length with the mattress and the desired side drop. If it will tuck under the mattress, allow for that separately.
| Use | Measurement to prioritise |
|---|---|
| Reading on the sofa | Length from shoulders to feet and enough width to wrap comfortably |
| Extra bed layer | Mattress width, length and the overlap needed during movement |
| Guest-room spare | Storage volume and compatibility with the beds actually available |
Read the fabric and care label
Check fibre composition rather than relying on a texture name such as fleece or plush. The feel, stretch and care of a blanket depend on its construction as well as its weight. Do not assume that a heavier blanket is always warmer or that a natural-fibre label guarantees a particular comfort level. For frequent washing, consider how the blanket fits your machine and drying space. A manageable blanket that is easy to keep clean may be more useful than an oversized one that rarely comes out of storage.
