A fitted sheet must match the mattress length, width and depth. The bed-size name is only a starting point: adding a topper can make an otherwise correct sheet too shallow.
Measure the bed as it is used
Measure across the top of the mattress, then its length and the full depth including any topper that sits beneath the sheet. Do not measure the bed frame. Record the numbers in centimetres and compare them with the sheet's stated finished size and maximum mattress depth.
| Common Australian size | Nominal mattress width × length |
|---|---|
| Single | About 92 × 188 cm |
| King single | About 107 × 203 cm |
| Double | About 137 × 188 cm |
| Queen | About 153 × 203 cm |
| King | About 183 × 203 cm |
These are common reference dimensions, not a guarantee that every brand is identical. Compare the actual mattress and sheet labels; overseas size names can describe different measurements.
Allow for the corners
A mattress measuring 30 cm deep with a 5 cm topper needs a sheet designed for that combined depth. A pocket dimension is not always the same as the maximum mattress depth, so use the maker's fit guidance. Corners that continually pull off usually need a fit check before stronger elastic. Check the package contents too. A fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcases may be sold separately or as a set. Confirm pillowcase dimensions rather than assuming every queen set includes the same pillow size.
